President Karzai announces 'peace council' to push Taliban talks - Afghanistan


5 September 2010 - An Afghan peace council to pursue talks with the Taliban has been set up, President Hamid Karzai said on Saturday, the latest step in a gradual move toward reconciliation with the Islamist insurgents. In London, the British Foreign Office welcomed Karzai's announcement. (more)

Israel, Palestinians agree to more peace meetings


4 September 2010 - Israeli and Palestinian leaders opened direct peace talks under US auspices on Thursday and agreed to meet every two weeks to try to forge a deal within a year to end a conflict that has boiled for six decades. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who hosted the talks between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, expressed confidence that this effort could succeed where so many others have failed.
